WHICH SWIM CLASS IS RIGHT FOR YOU [top]

Class Descriptions

When deciding what class to enroll yourself or your child, we suggest starting with the last level you or your child completed.  If you haven't taking lessons before or if it has been a long time, please review the class descriptions to determine the best class for you or your child.

Class placement should be based on skill level rather than age.  Ages provided are just a guideline.

Par/tot (6 months - 3yrs.)
Child and parent are in the water.  This class is designed to get the child used to the water.  Will work on kicking, floating, reaching for toys and water safety.

Is your child at least 3yrs. old and can follow instructions given by the instructor?  If the answer is yes, place the child in the tot class without parent.

Tot (3-5 yrs.)
This class is without a parent.  For those kids that may be a little afraid of the water and have little or no water experience.  Children will work on floating, kicking, reaching for toys and water safety.

Will your child put his/her head under the water willingly?  If the answer is yes, place the child in the advanced tot class.

Advanced Tot (4-6 yrs.)
For those children that have some experience in water.  Children will work on floating on tummy and back.  Children will also work on straight leg kick rather than bicycle kick.

Can your child float unsupported on their tummy and back for 3-5 seconds?  If yes, place them in Level I.

Level I (5-7 yrs.)
For those kids that have had water experience/lessons.  We will introduce the front crawl, moving away from doggie paddle.  Children will also work on kicking on front and back and gliding on front and back.  Children MUST be able to float.

Can your child float on tummy and back unsupported, and do they know the front/back glide?  Do they know the beginning stages of front crawl?  If the answer is yes, place the child in Beginning Level II.

Beg Level II (6-8 yrs.)
Students start to swim freestyle independently and are exposed to rhythmic breathing.  Back crawl is introduced.
Does your child know the front crawl (without rotary breathing)?  If yes, place in Advanced Level II.

Advanced Level II (6-8 yrs.)
Students will become comfortable with independent swimming.  They will be swimming 10 yards and perfecting their kick, front and back crawl arms.

Can your child swim at least 10 yards without stopping and do the front crawl with rotary breathing?  If yes, then place in Level III.

Beginning/Advanced Level II
This class is a combined beginning and advanced class.  Most level II classes are offered as a combination during the fall and winter swim sessions.

Level III (7-9 yrs.)
Students will be swimming 15-25 yards by the end of class in either front crawl and/or back crawl.  Breathing to the side (rotary breathing) is very important in this class.  Elementary backstroke is introduced and heavily practiced also.

Can your child swim the full length of the pool and does he/she know the front/back crawl and elementary back stroke?  If yes, place in Beginning Level IV.

Beg Level IV (8-10 yrs.)
Students will be swimming the entire length of the pool in both the front and back crawl.  Other strokes will be introduced in this level.  The breast stroke and side stroke are introduced in this class along with the breast and side stroke kick.

Can your child swim 25 yards without stopping?  Does he/she know the breast and side stroke kick?  If yes, place in Advanced Level IV.

Advanced Level IV (8-10 yrs.)
Technique and strength are the goals in this class.  Students will learn the breast and sidestroke arms to be combined with the kicks.  Students need to attend this class to become proficient at swimming for distance, breath control and stroke refinement.

Does your child know front and back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast and side stroke?  If yes, place in Stroke Clinic.

Beginning/Advanced Level IV
This class is a combined beginning and advanced class.  Most level IV classes are offered as a combination during the fall and winter swim sessions.

Stroke Clinic
This is a 45 minute class designed for the level IV or better swimmer.  Classes will focus on stroke improvement, technique, endurance, turns and competitive strokes.
Does your child know all swim strokes and need minimal refinement?  If yes, place in DHI class.

DHI
This is a 60 minute "Dolphin High Intensity" swim team style class.  This class is a workout and you need to know all the strokes.

Beginning Teen (10 and up)
This class offers basic instruction for older kids that have not had swim lessons.  Students will work on floating, gliding, breath control and the beginning stages of front/back crawl.

Beginning Adult
This class offers basic instruction that includes floating, gliding, breath control and the beginning stages of front/back crawl.

Advanced Adult
This class works on refining front/back crawl, breath control.  Other strokes may be added.  Students may also work on flip turns.

Swim Fit
